Pillar rises to 892 m (2,927 ft) on the ridge between Ennerdale and Mosedale in the western fells. With 349 m of prominence it is a Marilyn as well as a Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall and Birkett. Pillar Rock, a tall crag known to rock climbers, stands 0.3 km to the north on the Ennerdale face. Great Gable, the nearest higher fell, is 4.3 km to the south-east, and Scoat Fell lies 1.4 km to the south-west.
The usual route starts at Wasdale Head and climbs Mosedale to Black Sail Pass, then follows the ridge west over Looking Stead to the summit. The High Level Route leaves the ridge at Looking Stead and traverses the Ennerdale face to Robinson's Cairn and the foot of Pillar Rock. It is narrow and exposed in places and needs care. Many walkers take in Pillar on the Mosedale Horseshoe with Red Pike and Scoat Fell.
