About Fairfield

Fairfield rises to 873 m (2,864 ft) at the head of Rydale, north of Ambleside. With 300 m of prominence it is a Marilyn as well as a Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall and Birkett. Its southern ridges form the Fairfield Horseshoe, and the north face drops in crags into Deepdale and towards Grisedale. Hart Crag lies 1.1 km to the south-east and Great Rigg 1.4 km to the south.

The Fairfield Horseshoe is the classic way up. You start in Ambleside or Rydal, climb one arm of the horseshoe, cross the summit and come down the other. From the north, walkers climb from Patterdale over St Sunday Crag and Cofa Pike, or reach Grisedale Tarn and climb the steep slope to the top. From Grasmere, Tongue Gill also leads to Grisedale Tarn.

The summit is a broad, stony plateau with several cairns and wind shelters. In mist you can walk off the wrong side, and the northern edge ends in crags. Use a compass on the plateau.
