Blencathra, also called Saddleback, rises to 868 m (2,848 ft) at Hallsfell Top on the northern edge of the Lake District, east of Keswick. Its southern face is a row of steep ridges and deep combes above Threlkeld, and you can pick it out from far along the valley. It is a Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall, Marilyn and Birkett, and Skiddaw, the nearest higher fell, lies 6.4 km to the west.
Blease Fell from the Blencathra Centre and Scales Fell from Scales give walking routes on steep grassy paths. Hall's Fell Ridge climbs from Threlkeld straight to the summit with easy scrambling on rock. Sharp Edge rises from Scales Tarn on the eastern side as a narrow, exposed rock arête and a proper scramble.
Sharp Edge has a long record of serious accidents. Its sloping slate turns slippery in the wet, and in winter it becomes a mountaineering route. If you have doubts, go up Scales Fell instead. Behind the summit, the grassy back of the mountain runs north towards Atkinson Pike and Bannerdale Crags.
