Black Combe rises to 600 m (1,969 ft) near the coast in the far south-west of Cumbria, between the Duddon estuary and the Irish Sea. With 362 m of prominence it is a Marilyn, and it appears among Wainwright's Outlying Fells and the Birketts. White Maiden, the nearest higher hill, lies 15.6 km to the north-east.
The usual ascent starts by the church at Whicham and climbs a clear grassy path up the southern flank. You meet no difficulties on the way, and the ground is grass and bracken until the summit, a broad moorland top with a trig point inside a stone shelter. For a longer day you can drop north-west towards Whitbeck or Bootle on fainter paths.
Black Combe stands close to the sea, and on a clear day you can see the Isle of Man, the Scottish hills across the Solway and the Lakeland fells to the north-east. Wind off the sea hits the top with nothing to break it, so carry warm layers in any season.
