About Gowbarrow Fell

Gowbarrow Fell rises above Ullswater east of Aira Beck. The famous waterfall of Aira Force lies in the wooded gill on its western flank. Little Mell Fell is 2.7 km north-east.

The usual start is the National Trust car park at Aira Force. A path climbs past the falls or up the open slope to the summit, which carries a trig pillar on a rocky knoll among heather and bracken. A popular round follows a terrace path around the lake side of the fell, with views along Ullswater.

Its low height makes it a good choice when cloud sits on the higher fells around Ullswater. From the terrace and the top you look along Ullswater to Place Fell and the Helvellyn range.
