About Stone Arthur
Stone Arthur is less a separate hill than a crag on the south-west shoulder of Great Rigg, which rises 1.4 km north-east. From Grasmere the outcrop shows as a rocky crest on the skyline. It is a Wainwright and a Birkett, and Helm Crag lies 2.1 km west across the valley.
The path starts in Grasmere and climbs beside Greenhead Gill before turning up the spur. It is steep from the start, on a well-made path with pitched sections, and the summit rocks sit at the top of the steepest part. The route then continues at an easier angle up the ridge to Great Rigg and on to Fairfield.
The view from the top takes in Grasmere, the lake and the Helm Crag ridge. Many walkers use Stone Arthur as the start of a round over Great Rigg and Heron Pike back to Rydal or Grasmere.
