Helm Crag reaches 405m (1,329ft) on the north side of Grasmere, where Easedale meets the main valley. Its rocky crest carries the outcrops people call the Lion and the Lamb, seen from the road over Dunmail Raise. Gibson Knott lies 1.2km north-west along the ridge. It is a Wainwright and Birkett.
You walk out of Grasmere along Easedale Road and climb a steep, pitched path up the south-east end of the fell. The ridge continues over Gibson Knott to Calf Crag, and many walkers make a round back down Far Easedale.
The true summit is the Howitzer, a tilted block of rock at the north-west end of the crest. Reaching its top needs an exposed scramble, and Wainwright himself never stood on it. Most walkers stop at its foot, which is a sensible choice in wind or wet weather.
