About Low Fell
Low Fell stands at the north-west edge of the Lake District, between Loweswater and the Vale of Lorton. It is a ridge of small grassy and heathery tops, and the southern end looks along Crummock Water into the Buttermere valley with the high fells either side. Fellbarrow lies 1.7km north along the same ridge. Burnbank Fell, the nearest higher hill, is 3.2km south-west beyond Loweswater.
Most walkers start at Thackthwaite, a hamlet on the Lorton side, and follow a lane and grassy path up onto the ridge. From there you walk south over the tops to the summit and the viewpoints beyond it. The paths are grass, with wet patches in the dips between the tops.
The ridge suits a short day or a first fell walk. You can add Fellbarrow by heading north from Thackthwaite first and following the ridge south over both hills.
