About Barf

Barf rises above the main road and the western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake, at the eastern end of the Lord's Seat group. Lord's Seat, the higher neighbour, lies 1.0 km to the west, with Broom Fell 1.9 km away in the same direction. Whinlatter Forest covers much of the ground to the south and west.

From the lake you see a bare front of scree and crag. Partway up stands the Bishop, a pinnacle of rock that local people keep painted white. A direct route climbs past the Bishop and up the scree. It is steep and loose, and most walkers prefer to come down another way.

The easier ascent starts at Thornthwaite and climbs through the forest beside Beckstones Gill to the col with Lord's Seat, then turns east to the heathery summit. Barf is a Wainwright and a Birkett, and the top gives a close view over the lake to Skiddaw.

Barf is 469 m (1,539 ft) high with 38 m of prominence. It is in Lake District N, England. OS grid reference NY214267. It is the 19th highest of the 25 summits Peakify lists in Lake District N. The nearest summits are Ullister Hill (0.9 km), Lord's Seat (1.0 km) and Broom Fell (1.9 km).
