About Base Brown
Base Brown stands above Seathwaite at the head of Borrowdale. It forms the north-eastern end of a ridge that runs down from Green Gable, 1.3 km to the south-west. Brandreth lies 1.2 km to the west and Seathwaite Fell is across the valley of Grains Gill to the south. Great Gable is 1.8 km away, beyond Green Gable.
The usual climb starts at Seathwaite farm. A path crosses the river and climbs beside Sourmilk Gill, with some easy hands-on rock steps, into the hanging valley of Gillercomb. From the comb, a path climbs onto Base Brown's ridge and up to the summit. The east side, facing Seathwaite, is steep and craggy, so stick to the paths.
Base Brown is a Wainwright, a Hewitt, a Nuttall and a Birkett. A popular round links it with Green Gable, Brandreth and Grey Knotts, giving you a close view of Great Gable before you drop back to the valley.
