Carn Mor Dearg stands 1.4 km north-east of Ben Nevis, across the deep glen of the Allt a' Mhuilinn. It is a Munro and a Marilyn, with a pointed summit of pink granite at the head of a long ridge. Carn Dearg Meadhonach lies 0.5 km to the north on the same ridge, and Aonach Mor 1.7 km to the north-east.
The usual ascent starts at the North Face car park at Torlundy. A path climbs through the forest and up the Allt a' Mhuilinn, and you then leave it to climb steep slopes onto the ridge at Carn Beag Dearg. The ridge leads south over Carn Dearg Meadhonach to the summit. Most walkers continue across the Carn Mor Dearg Arête to Ben Nevis and descend by the Mountain Track.
From the ridge you look straight across at the cliffs and gullies of the Ben Nevis north face. The arête is narrow and exposed, with easy scrambling over granite blocks, and in winter it becomes a mountaineering route.
