Ben Nevis, Beinn Nibheis in Gaelic, rises above Fort William at the western end of the Grampians. At 1345m it is the highest mountain in Britain, and its prominence equals its full height. It is a Munro, a Marilyn and the county top of Inverness-shire. The great cliffs of the north face hold some of the best-known winter climbing in Scotland. Carn Mor Dearg lies 1.4 km to the north-east.
The Mountain Track, often called the Tourist Path, starts from Glen Nevis or Achintee. It climbs to the halfway lochan, Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe, then zigzags up stony ground to the summit plateau with its observatory ruins and emergency shelter. The finer route leaves the North Face car park, climbs Carn Mor Dearg and crosses the narrow Carn Mor Dearg Arête.
The summit plateau is often in cloud, and steep gullies cut into it from the north face, among them Gardyloo and Five Finger Gully. In poor visibility, follow set compass bearings off the top. Snow lies late into the year.
Ben Nevis is 1,345 m (4,411 ft) high with 1,345 m of prominence. It is in Highland, Scotland. OS grid reference NN166712. It is the highest of the 1,458 summits Peakify lists in Highland. The nearest summits are Douglas Boulder (0.5 km), Carn Dearg (1.0 km) and Carn Dearg (1.1 km).
